New Canon Appointed for HONA

Thursday, March 4, 2010

Dear HONA family,

It is my distinct pleasure to announce to you today my appointment of a new Canon to the Missionary Bishop for the Heart of North America Regional Network.

TheAM Council of Bishops has unanimously approved my recommendation to elect and on April 30th 2010 in Lexington, KY install The Rev. Peter Matthews as Canon for the HONA Region.

In his new role, Peter will take on a number of tasks which are being designed to maximize his effectiveness as a church plant catalyst and discipleship coordinator. I have asked Peter to continue in his work as both Network Leader of the River of Life Network and as Rector of St. Patrick’s Anglican Church. http://saintpatrickschurch.org/

Canon Matthews has been married to his wife Trudi for 20 years.  Peter has been in vocational ministry for 22 years.

After ten years of ministry in Ames, Iowa, Peter and Trudi along with their children moved to Kentucky so he could attend Asbury Theolgical Seminary. While in school, Peter worked at the Episcopal Church of the Apostles. His time at Church of the Apostles solidified a sense of call to the Anglican tradition that he had been wrestling with since college.

After graduating from seminary with a Masters of Divinity in summer 2003, Peter and Trudi together with a team of 15 adults launched Saint Patrick's Church. From this new parish, Peter has worked with a growing cadre of young leaders who have now planted new ministries in Nicholasville, Corbin, and Covington, KY as well as a campus ministry to the University of Kentucky. Peter also serves as a HONA Network Leader overseeing churches in Kentucky, West Virginia, and Southern Ohio.

Peter and Trudi have four children: Dylan (15), Rees (11), Ainsley (6) and Shelby (4). Peter loves music (especially The Beatles), plays guitar, loves movies and books.  His favorite quote is:  He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.

I am appreciative of the work that each of you does and am certain that releasing Peter to work with increased authority among you will bring added blessing to our mutual endeavor.

Please join me in offering your congratulations to, and prayers for, Canon-Elect Matthews as he steps forward into this increased responsibility.

May God bless us all and guide and protect our dear brother,
